World's Longest Email Chain About Shorts

My parents are visiting this weekend. They live in South Florida and, in their minds, any place above Orlando during the months of October - May could be overcome with a freeze of Ice Age proportions.

Yes my parents have used the Internet. Yes they are aware that there's a whole channel around weather. And yet, God forbid that they would use any of those mediums to figure out whether my father should bring shorts.

9:19 AM: I call my Mom to confirm whether or not she will be joining me for spinning. She will not be. However she does ask, "What's the weather like? Is it cold? Can Dad bring shorts?"
Me: "It's kinda rainy and we're in the 60s right now. But if he wants to go for a walk or something then sure. It's layering weather."

11:49 AM: My mom leaves me a message and sends an email.
"Dad will be sending you an email as soon as he gets to his office. He was at another office this morning."

1:38PM: Dad.
"Cuqui: Questions Should I pack some shorts?????"

Me: "Blowing Rock is in the 60s. (I include a screenshot from weather.com.) Sunny but still cool!
In Raleigh - our highs are in the mid-70s and a bit rainy. You can bring shorts to walk (they walk for exercise and my dad hauls ass) but you would probably be better off in jeans."

3:09: Dad.
"Cuqui: I mean Raleigh."

Me: "It was in my last email."

3:11: Dad.
"Oh. I don't see it."

Me: "Nevermind. It’s a bit rainy in Raleigh right now. Our highs are in the mid-high 70s but rainy. You will probably want to bring shorts for walking, etc. But jeans and pants for going out at night. Does that help?"

3:18: Dad.
"So I should bring shorts?"

Me: Face palm.

3:20: Me. "Yes Dad. Whatever you want."

3:25: Dad.
"What about sweaters?"

Sigh.

I have shit going on. Personal shit. Yes, more personal than the depression post. Now I can make a claim that the depression directly corresponds to the amount of comments I get.

KIDDING.

Anyhoodle. Can someone please answer the following questions for me? All are related to this picture.

1) Why do designers use teenagers for bridal wear?
2) How does the OMG-I-am-getting-my-period pose translate to "look at this pretty wedding dress"?
3) When did the 80s bang come back and why did no one tell me?
4) What is the whole skeletal arm attraction? Her shoulder is at least 3 inches bigger than the rest of her arm. It looks weird.
5) Who thought "You know what's awesome on your wedding day? EXTRA cleavage, a drop-waist and Dolly Parton hair!" Goes with the extra cleavage of course.

ETA: Hey LeeLee Sobieski! It's been a minute. How you doing girl?

Depression 101

Late last year I nearly lost my mind. Now before you pipe up all - girl you done lost your mind already, let me clear. I. ALMOST. LOST. EVERYTHING to the life-changing world of advertising

Aside: you know you live and die by ad campaigns right? No? Well shit.

I worked with the most horrifically awful client ever. Nasty, undermining and passive-aggressive - day in and day out. Couple that with long hours, an uninvolved boss, an unhelpful producer and the fastest timeline on a project the likes of which I have never worked on in my entire life.

Look people have real problems - they don't have jobs, can't pay their mortgage and are trying to feed their kids - I totally get that. And I am in no way comparing my problems to anyone else's. All I can talk about is what I know.
Got it? Great. Now where was I? Oh right. Losing it.

I was working late nights for an ungrateful client. I was traveling to the West Coast for shoots. I was updating page after page of scripts with legal changes, client changes and creative changes. My producer bitched at me hourly. I scheduled meetings, changing them, deleting them and then fucked up everyone's Outlook. I came home every night and ruined my husband's T-shirts with my snotty sobs.
I know. FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS.
I was in a hole. This HUGE SINKING hole. Every email, every snide comment, every gentle reproach became another boulder on the mountain of FAILURE.

My jeans don't fit? Add it to FAILURE.
I didn't decorate the house for Christmas? Pile that on to FAILURE.
I forgot your birthday? FAILURE's got a new rock!

It was a huge, overwhelming, looming shadow of YOU SUCK. I stepped into an anxiety-ridden, sleepless, dark & twisty place. And yeah, try backing out of that shit.

I didn't enjoy anything. Nothing. Not books. Not running. Not Thanksgiving dinner. Not the beach. Not sex. NOTHING. All I wanted to do was be alone and listen to NPR. Cheery!

I trudged into my shrink's office in sweats and a stained black T-shirt to cry all over his couch. He took one look at me and was all "Quit your job." He recommended meds STAT and steered me to my GP who also got the whole crying-stained-T-shirt treatment before loading me up Lexapro. Can you blame these poor people?

Then I got two weeks of vacation. And things were better. Then they moved me to another account. And things got much better. Then the meds kicked in. And things got HOLY FUCK THIS IS AWESOME better.

But you know what? I still need to quit my job. Only now I can do it with insouciance instead of blind-screaming rage. Helpful when recommendation-time comes along, yes?

Frankly, I started this post with completely different intentions - wah wah hate my boss, wah wah never promoted, wah wah advertising is hard. But then this happened. And now I forget my original point, but it wasn't nearly as serious as this post.

Tangents are a funny thing.

Dead Space

I have no ending for this; I just like the way it came together. It's mostly true. As of writing this, Marty & Melody have begun dating. They're horrifically cute and in love. I've designed their wedding invitation in my head at least 100 times. Names have been changed to protect the innocent and horrifically stupid.

“Air Hug!” The low screech assaults my ears from the desk just behind me. I look over at my podmate, Allie, who studiously avoids my gaze as laughing out loud and pointing are frowned upon. The blond took over Brynn’s seat three weeks ago much to our collective chagrin.
Before Brynn left for greener pastures, our little cluster held the title as the loudest, rowdiest & most fun (funnest, if you will) in the agency. The office manager wanders up from her office at least once a week to chat and soak up some of our ridiculousness. The COO (just to the left of my desk) leaves her door open so she can hear the latest gossip / shenanigans. Creatives, directors and occasionally partners come over to spend time away from their offices and weasel their way into donut Fridays. Perfectly situated between the stairway and the hallway connecting the two buildings in our refurbished warehouse office space, we see and are seen by everyone. The open plan guarantees you can hear our fun for at least 50 feet in either direction. Blaring Cee-Lo’s” F*ck You” every Friday morning also helps.
We're all terribly good-looking. Shocking, I know.
Marty, the only guy and therefore surrounded by beautiful women who lavish him with attention, is fly-over state born and bred. Think a rhythm-less Gene Kelly with gorgeous salt & pepper hair, a Crest-worthy smile and a well-used gym membership. He’s the oldest of 4 brothers and anything remotely related to girls-only situations squick him out. Naturally we’re relentless with tampons, pads, menses and about everything else inappropriate we can think of to torture him.
Melody and Allie are hands down the best-looking girls in this piece. Melody looks like a supermodel – long legs, perfect ass and perky, perfectly proportioned boobs. After seeing her in a bathing suit I prayed to be touched by a sudden allergy to all things classified as delicious. Melody eats whatever she wants, often putting down 3-4 tacos in one sitting and washing it down with a full-sugar Coke. I would hate her but she’s the nicest human being on the planet and incredibly smart to boot.
**re-reads above**
OK, maybe I hate her a little bit.
A former employee used to call Allie “The Flame.” Dark hair, blue eyes and a perfect sprinkling of freckles make her cute and not spotted. She’s mastered the perfect touch Southern accent – enough to be charming but not enough to conjure up NASCAR car races. Her legs, clad in skinny jeans and sexy T-strap pumps, go on forever. She looks better in a shirt from Target than any boutique-only Manhattanite I know. She loves Clemson football, can perkily run 9 miles without breaking a sweat and works like a Chilean miner.
That's just in the immediate vicinity. There’s a whole other set of ridiculously hot, smart girls over at the next pod. We’re over and back at each other’s desks often or we just stand up and yell insults, “that’s what she saids” or whatever else needs to be shared at top volume.
Brynn’s departure left a gaping hole in our group but it also offered a space for the better transients to sit, set up laptop-shop and be part of the neighborhood. Karrie, my good-friend and high-level director, held the seat for at least a week. She’s a perfect neighbor and knows everyone well-enough to partake in the insults and Marty-jeering. Alas, her office is a haven for over-worked, underpaid minions so she spends some time counseling the ad-wounded with her door firmly shut.
Brynn’s office chair had barely cooled before Air Hug moved all her shit into the desk and made us privy to her constant inanity. Apparently Air Hug’s supervisor needed her close by to watch her comings and goings. We get to listen to her mind-bending chatter all day while she sits in a coveted space trying to insert herself wherever she can. How her punishment became our punishment I will never know. Allie walked in on Monday fresh off her vacation, took one look at Air Hug and asked “Was there an HOA meeting held while I was on vacation?”
“No Allie,” I responded. “The board did not consult with us as previously requested. Assholes.”
We tried to move some of our far-away fun neighbors over. We got nowhere. Instead, we ignored Air Hug as best as possible with headphones and deadpan looks.
Two weeks later I get back from a long shoot in LA to see my beloved workspace, the place I spend the majority of my waking life, taken over by unknown blondes. Don, Brynn’s neighbor, got promoted out of pod-life and into a teeny, coffin-like office. Replacing him is yet another blonde - approximate age 22. She looks like every single blonde sorority girl who wears pearls and only goes to the “good” frats. Her voice doesn’t have the breathy quality of Air Hug’s but the same tinny ring of stupidity. Oh was that mean? Well she left her car running yesterday for FOUR HOURS. Yeah, that’s right. She got out of Daddy's Prius nattering into her cell phone, put her purse on her shoulder and purposefully walked away WITH HER KEYS IN THE IGNITION. When the security guard called her to come please retrieve her keys, she fought with him insisting the car was charging and "it always sounds like it’s on but really it isn't."
“Ma’am,” he said with an exasperated sigh. The keys are IN the ignition. The car is running. Please come downstairs and retrieve your keys.”
We decide she needs a nickname but can't come up with anything good. I would play off her name except I don't know her name nor do I really care to know it. If you have any suggestions dear reader I am happy to pass it along.

Working on it

I have a new/old post I am working on. One of the 7 Posts that turned into actually-30-something old posts.

I promise to post it soon for that... one? two? person/people out there who actually care.

Free Learnins?! Sign me up.

This post was started on 4/20/09. Heh. 4/20.
I am sure I had more to say. But this pretty much says it all.

Due to a recession and a soon-to-be out of work husband, I haven't been purchasing books like normal. However, I have renewed my love for library books. And no it isn't the smell - CARRIE BRADSHAW - it's the price. Or lack thereof.

FREEEEEE.

YAY FREE.

So on a slow day such as today, I have taken to perusing the online catalog and searching for books to add to my ever-growing list. One teensy complaint - new titles. They don't have them. Get them. Thanks.

Also, don't ever let me check out more than three books that:
a) you can't renew past the one week due date
b) can't be read in 2 weeks by ANYONE ON THIS PLANET with a job
c) that are missing pages. PAGES. Pertinent to the story. Because there are WORDS ON THEM.
